- Temperance is like moderation or practicing self-control. It doesn’t hate pleasure, but moderates it.
- The goal is to learn to govern your natural appetite for pleasure.
Why is Temperance Good?
- It helps you live longer - you make better decisions about how to eat, how to sleep, how to exercise, how to care for yourself.
- You manage your money better - you’re less likely to spend on frivolous things. There are many stories of football players who went broke right after retirement, or lottery winners who spent it all.
- You’re more attractive - you appear to be a man with conviction. You know what is best for you and won’t give in to temptation or peer pressure.
- It demonstrates modesty, particularly in your success. Controlling your ability to celebrate wins, etc.

💡 “Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.“ ~ Napoleon Hill

Ways to Build Temperance
- Analyze your life - be specific about areas you’d like to be more disciplined in. Look where you lack self-control.
- Set goals - build momentum. Start with goals that are easy to accomplish to build the muscle.
- Stay accountable - have someone to hold you accountable if you want.
- Track progress - business people know that what gets measured gets managed.
- Deny yourself. Remove things that tempt you.
- Give yourself grace. You will mess up. You’re human. That’s okay. Dust yourself off and try again.
- Don’t compare yourself to others - focus on setting your own rules and then live by them.
